Old Man's Beard, Tamaki River, Dannevirke

Kaitiaki o Ngahere Ltd has been working with Horizons Regional Council to control old man's beard that is growing along the Tamaki River, to prevent the spread into the Ruahine Range. Additionally to prevent the river stabilising vegetation not being smothered by Old Man's Beard.

Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba) is a highly invasive weed species, that grows rapidly and forms dense masses that dominate and smother natives. Due to its fast-growing nature and ability to spread via water and air, it's crucial to prevent the spread into valuable ecosystems. Due to the weeds growing so close to the river, there is a high chance they would spread if not controlled.

Using manual and chemical applications of weed control, combined with a long history and knowledge of controlling Old Man's Beard, Kaitiaki o Ngahere Ltd has successfully controlled dedicated sections. We continue to make further progress while accomplishing the goals for Horizon Regional Council.
