Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Restoration Plan

Kaipupu Point Mainland Island is on the outskirts of Picton in the Marlborugh Sounds.  A Trust was formed which raised money to build a predator- proof fence that now separates the peninsular of land that is now the Mainland Island, from the mainland.  The Trust applied for and received Grant Funding to employ Kaitiaki o Ngahere to write a pest plant management plan for the Mainland Island.

  • Predator-proof fence

  • View from the top

  • Wilding pines in regenerating bush

  • Kaipupu Point location

Project Components

  • Consultation with stakeholders
  • General ecological survey and mapping of the area, identifying areas of higher and lower ecological value and high or low threat from pest plants
  • Outline of the recommended steps to be taken to control the pest plants, and allocated tasks to contractors or volunteers as appropriate
  • Timeline and resource requirements

The outcome
Pest plant control has begun on the Mainland Island, trapping and fauna surveys are underway – all steps towards being in a situation to re-introduce some rarer plant and animal species.  Plans for the construction of visitor asset facilities are underway and soon it will be accessible to the public.  Meanwhile pest plant control continues to assist the return of the peninsular to a more sustainable ecosystem.
